Bordering on brilliance…

There you have it!

Miami Vice

I’m going to target this to the ladies, as well as the guys who ‘think’ like us ladies.

Let’s face it, there really is no story here. Honestly ladies, you’re going for 2+ hours of face time with the guys, Jamie Foxx’s shower scene and his ‘fake out’ (Mandy, you’d love this part!).

It’s your typical action movie that includes high speed cigarette boats, a couple bedroom scenes, a few annoyingly long shootouts, while they’re fighting out a whole drug ring thing.  Original storyline, huh?

What I did like was that the women weren’t dumbed down and made to look wimpy. They were all strong women. In one particular hostage scene, the female shooter told the bad guy what she was going to do to him and then did it.  I thought for sure, they’d make her hesitate or they’d let one of the men do it for her, but she did it!

So I’d recommend it from the feminist standpoint, the eye-candy factor, and the popcorn. What can I say…a woman’s gotta have priorities.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend

I would definitely wait and see this movie when it’s on cable. That way if you get up for a potty break and forget to come back, you haven’t missed much. While it wasn’t horrible, it wasn’t really good enough to spend money on either.

Matt and I saw it (matinee, of course) yesterday because it was a bit warmer than usual out (96 degrees!!), and as Carey described it, about 523% humidity, and we were strictly going for the A/C. It was the best of the 2 worst choices, I was expecting nothing, and miraculously pleasantly semi-surprised.

The premise of the movie involved a secret super hero girlfriend similar to Superman, but with anger management issues, and an average Joe who was trying to dump her, in part, for a cute blonde chick in his office he’d been pining over. That and she was a bit psycho anyway.

While the over-the-top effects like throwing cars and sharks, made it hoaky, the storyline could still have been really funny without it.

Apparently it left no lingering effects or impact on me, because later Keven asked what we’d seen, I honestly couldn’t remember.  I figured if nothing else, at least I didn’t thoroughly hate it, like The Hills Have Eyes, which to date, I still think is one of the worst movies I’ve EVER seen (I can’t recall any others quite that gawd-aweful), and the A/C was awesome.

Shop Girl

This is definitely a movie I needed to see twice to pick up all of the nuances. The first time, Keven & I pretty much talked throughout the whole thing and ate endless amounts of popcorn! YUM!!

I liked this movie because it wasn’t predictable and was challenging on a psychological/emotional level.  It’s a good lesson that what you see, or what you think you see, is often very different from what really is.  It is also about self-fulfilling prophecies that come full circle.

While I love Steve Martin in his comedic silliness, I think he’s great in dramatic roles!  His serious movies always have an element of angst followed somewhere with a moment of truth.  And while they never seem to be 5 star movies, or aspire to be, they are always enjoyable.

Of his other movies, I also recommend:

A Simple Twist of Fate (drama)

LA Story (a fun parody)

The Pink Panther (he’s just silly!)

And his classic… The Jerk

PS.  Keven said I give away too much of the story and details.  How’d I do this time? Ü

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

I can’t even begin to think of how to summarize this movie as there were a number of subplots simultaneously hard at work.  I liked it better than the first, but now want to rent the original to refresh my memory, so I may change my mind, but doubt it.

I highly recommend spending the money to see this in the theatre. There really is something to be said about seeing this on the big screen. I don’t think it would be quite as enjoyable watching it on tv, which may be partially why I wasn’t as enthused about the first one.

I wouldn’t say it was a great movie, but entertaining, and definitely worth seeing.

The Door in the Floor

The characters were not developed initially so we, the viewers, weren’t able to form any kind of attachment or love-to-hate feeling toward any of them. This family survived the death of two beloved sons who died in a tragic accident. The parents had another child after the boys died, but the wife was unable to be the great mother she’d been to the boys and suffered from terrible grief and depression. The young daughter was fascinated by pictures of her brothers, whom she’d never known. She also had nightmares fairly regularly.  The husband/father who was rather detached and callous, was an author of children’s books that had these really creepy and disturbing pictures which left me with the impression that one contributing factor to the little girl’s nightmares was probably that she was traumatized by them!

In the midst of all this, they had a young intern who was spending the summer assisting the author while being deflowered by the wife. To add to the weirdness, the husband had a history of drawing women nude, but had a creepy pattern as to how he progressed to quite explicit ones, often involving mothers and daughters. Eeewww!

While there were a few funny scenes, this is not a feel good movie on any level.

Jeff Bridges did a much more interesting movie called “Fearless” several years back. It was about a man who survived a plane crash while losing his best friend/business partner, as well as coming to terms with the whole experience. At one point he felt so invincible he ate food he was allergic to, crossed busy streets without looking, and stood on the ledge of a tall building, without any fear. In the process, he was also attempting to reach out to a fellow survivor who lost her baby in the crash and was so grief stricken she was catatonic. I can recommend this movie instead of “The Door In The Floor”.

Failure to Launch

I liked all of the actors individually as well as the characters they were playing. With better scripting, I think it had potential to be a fun/funny movie. Many of the scenes didn’t fit well together or were too short to form any significant relativity. Some were quickly trying to unnecessarily establish male bonding, when we already knew the guys were tight. There was a whole scene involving a dolphin that not only added nothing, but didn’t pull the story together, or even fit for that matter, or later when it resurfaced later in the movie. I also wanted to break out my barf bag when, after 2 weeks, the two main characters were professing their intense feelings and I think there was reference to being in love. SJP also made a “for the rest of your life” attempt at a lame ultimatum at one point. HELLO PEOPLE! You’ve only known each other 2 weeks and were going to break up with each other and now they’re professing undying love!

Kit’s character was neurotic, dark, sarcastic, thus funny, and I loved the Dad’s naked room even if it did gross everyone out.

There was a  predictability issue which I also had with “The Devil Wears Prada” (LOVED Meryl Streep tho). I find that it takes some of the enjoyment out of the movie since you already know what’s going to happen, not to mention it takes on a corny-ness despite good actors/actresses.  And for some reason, post “Sex & the City”, SJP characters always seem exactly the same, but with a different storyline and renders me with an inability to like the character she’s portraying. Ironically, I did like her in Sex & the City.  I would categorize this with “The Devil Wears Prada”, “Made In Manhattan”, “13 Going 30″, etc., “just ok, nothing spectacular”. Thankfully the popcorn was AWESOME as usual!  Kudos to the chef!!Ü

Superman

aka Stupidman.

Although the guy looked good enough in his unitard, he just doesn’t seem to be quite the same Superman, the hero with impeccable timing I remembered him to be.  I also found it odd that I was pulling for Lois Lane’s fill-in love interest rather than the big man himself.  He didn’t seem to be where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be there. Thus, Richard (at least I think that was his name) stepped in and saved the day…only to later save Superman!  What’s up with that?!

It was ok, but I did feel a bit let down…what can I say…
