In Your Face…
For those of you who’ve been hassling me about not blogging so horribly much recently…and I won’t mention any names, KEVEN and you with the Symbols, formerly known as ERIK! I don’t feel so highly motivated to blog away when neither of you leaves any comments. At least Carey does, then emails for the inside detailed scoop, sometimes followed by a lively online discussion. She is often rewarded with either pictures, juicy details, or both! <<hint, hint>>

Movies, movies, movies…
We’ve seen so many movies lately. Some of which have impressed me so much I either can’t recall the titles or whether or not I’ve seen them, let alone tell you what they were about. Or maybe I’m just that blonde…you in the peanut gallery keep quiet!
This weekend I saw ”Fly Boys”. It was very slow initially and the theater was a freakin’ meatlocker. I admit I fell asleep twice in the beginning and nodded off a couple times too. Then something magical happened…it got interesting and the pace picked up. Admittedly, I don’t know that much about WWI, WWI aircraft or other battle related stuff, (I know you’re impressed with my terminology or lack of) so authenticity wasn’t as big an issue for me as Matt, although I do question how accurate some of the details/events were portrayed, at least from a realistic standpoint. It was based on a true story…I’m not sure how true to the truth it was, but for the most part was a fairly enjoyable movie. Of course, in true Hollywood style, they threw in a love story too, so I teased Matt that he was suckered him into a chick-flick…he hates that kind of stuff. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t call in busy conditioning his hair or something. Keven, you would’ve liked it. Ladies, you would have too.
I saw “Jackass II” also. I think you really have to appreciate that kind of humor to enjoy it. Some of it is either really incredibly stupid or over the top, but there was quite a bit that is hysterical. One part in particular was so funny, I was almost in tears. These guys are so abnormally obsessed with their privates, shoving things up their asses, taking anal beer bong enemas, eating/drinking the most revolting things that make everyone around them puke, that they really put “Fear Factor” to shame. It was really funny although I’m not sure you need to pay to see it in the theater…I think rental is just fine.
Last weekend I saw “Invincible”. Mark Wahlberg was as good as he could be given the script and slow storyline he was given. It was based on a true story, but there wasn’t any kind of creative enhancement to make it very interesting.
“Half Nelson” was somewhat interesting. It’s about a high school teacher/girl’s basketball coach who’s also a semi-functioning drug addict and found out by one of his students. She lives in the ghetto and has a father in prison, an uncle who enlists her in drug dealing, and a mother who works long hours just to barely get by. So this girl and the teacher become friends, but it is a somewhat sad movie and I was disappointed that the relationship between the girl and her mother wasn’t explored more.
“Hollywood Land” was a great $7 nap…it was slow as hell and I will never get those 2 hours of my life back! And ladies, Ben Affleck didn’t even look slightly good enough to make up for this disaster. It was so boring, I can’t remember what it was about.
“The Last Kiss” was more enjoyable, but you have to appreciate Zach Braff’s style. This is definitely neither a comedy nor a feel good movie, it’s quite depressing, and I advise against seeing it if you’re in the midst of turmoil in your own romantic relationship. I did like it and the characters though, and I could relate to many, if not all of the various quandries or events these people faced. I’m sure you can recall many of them. I left more notes about it on Keven’s blog, if you’re interested.
Loved, loved, loved Talladega Nights! This is a slip on a banana peel kind of comedy. You don’t laugh WITH this guy, you laugh AT him. He is a likable freakin’ idiot. And remember kids, “if you’re not first, you’re last”.
“The Illusionist” was really good and today I saw previews of an upcoming movie that look either like a sequel or very similar.
“Crank” was another disappointment. At least I can blame that pick on Matt & Keven. It was extremely long and totally unrealistic. The best part was the main character’s dingy blonde girlfriend, but there again, she was totally unrealistic.
“Little Miss Sunshine” was quirky and had some really funny parts, but unfortunately went to crap at the very end. It’s worth seeing, but wait for rental. (see Keven’s blog for more information)
“Quinceanera” was actually a pretty good story, very involving and had a somewhat satisfying ending. It was about a teenage girl from a very religious family who’s just about to turn 15 and finds out she’s pregnant even though she and her boyfriend had not consummated their relationship. The girl’s father kicks her out of the house, so she goes to live with an old uncle and gay cousin who’s having a regular fling with the gay couple upstairs. Even though the girl and her boyfriend are in love, his parents send him away and change his cell number, so pretty much she’s on her own until the OB/GYN confirms to the mother that the girl is still a virgin. The father is then convinced that this was an immaculate conception and allows her back into the family graces.
It was after this movie that Keven and I stolled along Broadway in search of a decent place to have a drink. We stopped at a place called Julia’s, where part way into our first drink, were entertained by a pre-opening night’s performance by female impersonators. Interesting and entertaining to say the least! We most definitely cannot complain about that being a boring evening! When I figure out how, I will post the pictures…otherwise, Keven’s got them posted on his blog. Very funny…check it out if you have a minute!
I looked through the movie listings, nothing seems to be unmentioned, so I think that brings you up to date. We’ve seen a truckload of things on dvd as well, but I will save that for another time.
20th Reunion
I got an email from Kim the other day. She’s on the planning committee for our 20th reunion. Ohmygod, I can’t believe that’s right around the corner! Not the 20th part, although that doesn’t seem so long ago, but more the fact that it’s been 10 years since the last one. Seems like we just went about 2 years ago…where does the time go?
Same thing with the kids. How is it that they’re growing up so fast? Although it seems like everytime I turn around there’s another birthday, I don’t feel older! More mischievous for real!!
Congratulations, Bryan!
Congrats on your promotion to Fire Inspector!! I know you worked your ass off to get this. In spite of the brick walls you ran into you finally got it. You really deserve this, my friend. I’m so proud of you!!
The power of positive thinking…
